Family Concerts: Once Upon a Time…


Symphony of the Mountains presents Once Upon a Time…, an interactive concert based on beloved children’s stories, Saturday, October 30th at Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon. The family-focused event includes a 2 PM Instrument Building Workshop, 3 PM Concert with guest artists from UVA-Wise and Appalachian Children’s Theatre, and a post-concert Instrument Petting Zoo.

Symphony of the Mountains, joined by UVA-Wise students & faculty and members of the Appalachian Children’s Theatre, will perform family favorites such as, Peter and the Wolf, The Nutcracker Suite, and Stephen Sondheim’s Children Will Listen.  Trumpeter’s Lullaby features soloist Donald Sorah.  Mr. Sorah directs string and trumpet ensembles at UVA-Wise.  Symphony supporters of all ages will enjoy well-known contemporary pieces West Side Story and Lord of the Rings.  Instrument Building Workshop and Instrument Petting Zoo allow students to explore their own musical skills before and after the concert.

Symphony of the Mountains and company will also perform this program Sunday, October 31st at JW Adams Combined School in Pound, VA.  The Instrument Building Workshop begins at 2 PM, Concert 3 PM, and Instrument Petting Zoo after the concert.  The Monday school performances, also at JW Adams Combined School, continue the Symphony’s mission of music education.
